GRAVITY

WOW. "Gravity" is an ASTOUNDING film that will take its courageous voyagers on a wild ride. Simply put, it will leave you breathless!! As you attempt to regain your composure, you will be given a fresh perspective, causing a new appreciation of life on a much deeper level than ever felt before. "Gravity" is an exquisite dance in space that will twirl and twist you through the stunning—and often unnerving—setting of stars, satellite debris, silence, and a stellar sunrise. It is a cinematic tour de force that will leave you gasping for air—and thankful for the ground beneath you...

After seeing this film, merely surviving will not be enough—you will want to embrace life and TRULY live!!!!

Flawless and heart-wrenching, yet beautiful in its simplicity and devastating honesty, "Gravity" is a simple story that seems to write itself organically with each passing scene. And that organic, unplanned feel is what seems to draw us in as we bounce between fear and awe. It is pure perfection!!

Sandra Bullock (Ryan Stone) and George Clooney (Matt Kowalski) give raw, honest, quietly powerful performances that will make you smile while tugging at your heartstrings.

Clooney plays a veteran astronaut who manages to maintain his debonair witty persona even in space, while encased head-to-toe in a space suit. Bullock is a dedicated, focused medical engineer who is experiencing her first expedition into space and is having a difficult time adjusting to her new, oxygen deficient surroundings. Floating from scene-to-scene effortlessly, she manages to ground the film providing the viewer something solid to hold on to. We stay hopeful for her, never letting go of that desire.

The 3D effects are spectacular, almost poetic in a sense. Whether it is the floating tears or the shattered debris from a Russian satellite that feels as though it has hurtled itself off screen right at you—every scene seems to bring something new to be awed by. Much more than just a film being watched onscreen, "Gravity" allows the viewer to feel like an additional character within the film instead of feeling like merely a spectator.

Barely giving a glimpse of the emotional ride—or the physical one—you will go on during the course of this film, the preview only serves to peak your curiosity and draw you into this unforgettable adventure. Questions will arise, horrors will be confirmed, answers will be given, and a new vision for your life will be unleashed.

It is a journey that you will not forget anytime soon.

Even the title itself helps to set up the premise of what we are about to witness. Not only is it a story about what it is like to function in a place where everything floats freely, but it is also a story about how one would react during serious situations that are out of our control.

The crux of the film, I believe, is that the human spirit is strong and often more resilient than we tend to give it credit for. We all face adversities and hardships, losses and painful situations, however, the point of life is to keep pushing forward and never give up, no matter how difficult, terrifying, intense, or lonely things get—and life definitely can become all of those things (and more) at times. And even though sometimes life can become more than we think we are able to bear on occasion, as the tagline of the movie states, "NEVER... LET... GO..."

Watching this film will not only provide a better understanding regarding what an astronaut must face during their space missions—but it will also cause viewers to reflect upon and evaluate how each one of us faces our own daily obstacles and determine what kind of life we choose to live—one filled with fear and stagnation, or preferably, one that overflows with confidence and growth.

By the end of the film I was sobbing (a reaction I wasn't prepared for) as I reflected upon the loss of my Mom, heartache and disappointment I have faced, and how at times it has all made me want to just give up and stop trying, stop caring. But that isn't the answer. I realized I must keep moving forward and instead of giving up, I must fight harder. Even though sadness and fear and loneliness may take over at times, those aren't the only emotions that life has to offer—there is also plenty of joy, strength, and connection available if we are willing to hold out just a bit longer and forge ahead with faith.

"Gravity" is a mesmerizing masterpiece that will stay with you long after the film has ended. And as scenes from the film flash into your mind you will be reminded that life is an adventure with many twists, turns, and unexpected events—some good, some bad, but all relevant to creating the person who we become. In most instances, the events that do occur are unable to be prepared for anyway. Perhaps instead of fighting the current, we should just hold on tight and enjoy the ride—because, at the very least, if we survive the often-times overwhelming events we are forced to face, we will at least have a really good story to tell.

In a time when many of us may struggle with feeling disconnected and perhaps adrift in our own lives, "Gravity" helps us to see things with fresh eyes—providing that sense of connection that we all crave.

REVIVAL THEATRE: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

The Rocky Horror Picture Show isn’t the type of movie you just watch — it is meant to be experienced.

Considered a cultural phenomenon by many, it continues to seduce audiences and has become a vital part of Hollywood’s vast entertainment scene.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a forbidden sugary snack that satiates the hunger of those individuals with even the most voracious appetites, leaving them smiling and satisfied. And for the curious, more innocent patron it will provide the opportunity to shed inhibitions for a few hours, and embrace that often-times repressed inner wild-child. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to face yourself in the morning—depending, of course, upon whether you choose to become a participant in the debauchery, or simply remain a wide-eyed observer.

Stripping participants of their inhibitions and fears, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a "strange journey" that will leave a lasting impression.

The film is about a newly engaged couple that have a breakdown in an isolated area. They must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite. While there—taunted by temptation—Brad and Janet ultimately give-in to their carnal desires, embracing a world unlike anything they have ever encountered before.

This scandalous show invades theatres everywhere on a regular basis, drawing swarms of fans from all over to revel in Rocky Horror’s raucous exhibition.

Thanks to INSOMNIAC CINEMA!’s creator and host, Andrew Gualtieri—and Regency Theatres—The Rocky Horror Picture Show screens at the Regency Buenaventura 6 theatre in Ventura, California the second Friday of EVERY month at midnight with a live shadow cast. Tickets are $9, and you must be at least 18 years of age (or over), or have permission from a guardian, in order to attend this salacious spectacle.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is an outlandish, crazy film that is fun to see on the big screen—but needs the energy of the crowd to really bring it alive.

With help from the TooMuchCoffeeCast (http://tmcc.rhps.org . . . www.facebook.com/TooMuchCoffeeCast), the necessary energy required is generated to create an experience attendees will never forget. Filled with shocking shenanigans and naughty behavior, it will be an outrageous evening and a night of pure bliss.

The TooMuchCoffeeCast (TMCC) is Ventura County’s only Rocky Horror Picture Show cast. After a long road, filled with ups-and-downs, they finally found a home at Regency’s Buenaventura 6 theatre. Welcomed with open arms, the TooMuchCoffeeCast has been performing there for the last few years and recently have been added to INSOMNIAC CINEMA!’s film screening line-up EVERY month. Thankfully, the “lips” are singing once again. According to their website, the cast “has some great additional treats in store” for the upcoming months, and they state that they have “returned with a vengeance in 2011.”

INSOMNIAC CINEMA! (IC!) is a weekly film series, in connection with Regency Theatres, that currently screens classic movies EVERY WEEK in Agoura (Regency Agoura 8), Ventura (Regency Buenaventura 6), and Pasadena (Regency Academy Cinemas).

The Agoura and Ventura shows begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and the Pasadena shows begin at midnight on Fridays.

INSOMNIAC CINEMA! brings film fans the opportunity to experience movies they never saw before, or experience once again favorite films from their childhood or a memorable time from their life. It is a wonderful service that Gualtieri is providing, and hopefully more people will attend the screenings.

Having seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show when there was only a handful of people in the theatre as well as having experienced it with an excited crowd and live shadow cast, I can honestly say that the only way to get the full impact of this cultural cuisine is to don your sexiest or craziest costume and embrace the insanity that is Rocky Horror. Live it up, people!! Let go—and have a little fun. Stop worrying about what everyone else is thinking, because I can guarantee you that the only thing they are thinking about is how much fun they are about to have—and how wild the night is going to get.

So, go ahead, get your costume on—or off—and go on down to the Regency Buenaventura 6 theatre for a romp with Rocky Horror!! "It's wonderfully weird . . . It's fabulously freaky . . . It's The Rocky Horror Picture Show"—and it is a show you certainly don’t want to miss.

"I would like, if I may,
to take you on a strange journey."

IT'S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY

IT'S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY IS RATED PG-13

"It's Kind Of A Funny Story" is a quirky, thoughtful, subtle emotional dramedy that will spark an examination of one's own life and perceptions. Filled with quiet emotion and a more subdued sense of humor, this slice of life story will remind the viewer that sometimes when you help someone else you actually end up helping yourself.

Watching this film, one is also faced with the realization of how necessary it is to be vulnerable in this life at times in order to truly connect with others, and how that vulnerability can help us to heal. "If you don't open up—you're never going to heal," Bobby (Zach Galifianakis) says.

Galifianakis shines in a darker, more dramatic role than the usual outlandish comedic characters he generally portrays. Keir Gilchrist, "Cool Craig"—leading the cast of eccentric characters—gives a raw, honest performance that is very relatable.

Throughout the film, Bobby offers unsolicited (yet, wise) advice to Craig on the importance of living a life filled with meaning. "You can't live your life in fear. What I would give to be you for a day, Craig," Bobby says. "I would do so much. I would just live . . . like it meant something."

Eventually Bobby's advice begins to resonate with Craig and he shares this newly-found knowledge with others. "I know it's lame, but skip anyway," Craig says. "Live."

"It's Kind Of A Funny Story"
is a look at how we choose to deal with our problems, fears, and issues, and how we come to a place of peace and acceptance about ourselves—regardless of our imperfections and shortcomings. This "funny story" is a must see, and will surely bring a smile to your face.

BURIED "BLURB"

BURIED IS RATED R

RYAN REYNOLDS TOTALLY ROCKS and BURIED could quite possibly be the BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!! It is a BRILLIANT piece of filmmaking that is a touch better than Psycho. Hitchcock would be proud. It is a claustrophobic, fear-induced emotional ride that will leave you breathless...

UP IN THE AIR "BLURB"

UP IN THE AIR IS RATED R

WONDERFUL MOVIE!!!! :) :) :) :) I laughed. I cried. I got a little angry. I left crying AND smiling. Yes, it has bleak, sad, and reality-based moments. But, it is also funny, sweet, touching, and hopeful. I believe the determining factor regarding each viewer's final opinion of this movie will be their life/world view.

MESSAGE OF THE MOVIE: Life may not always go as planned, or your way, but that doesn't mean goodness cannot be found within disappointment. Also, connecting with one another is what life is all about. Life is not a solo journey.

See it. Decide for yourself...

"Life's better with company. Everybody needs a copilot."

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER "BLURB"

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER IS RATED PG-13
Excellent movie!! :) :) I loved it so much I saw it twice back to back opening day. :) :) It's a quirky, fun flick that is funny, heart-wrenching, honest, and inspiring. You will certainly leave smiling and feeling uplifted. You will go on a journey with Tom as he experiences love, heartbreak, and the excitement associated with rediscovering passions and dreams. The style of the film is refreshing and engaging. (500) Days of Summer is a movie with heart that shouldn't be missed.

AMELIA

AMELIA IS RATED PG

Considering how many celebrities there are in the world posing as role models—it’s wonderful when a film reminds us of someone we can truly admire.

Directed by Mira Nair and starring Hilary Swank, "Amelia" examines the life and loves of Amelia Earhart—the iconic aviation figure who has been clouded in mystery and intrigue since her disappearance several decades ago.

Although the story may be subdued, not soaring as high as one might hope, it remains a captivating tale that will provoke one’s mind (introducing for many an extraordinary woman in history). Perhaps after viewing the film, one might even be motivated to take action and reach new heights in their own life. Possibly flying higher than ever deemed possible.

Amelia (the woman and the movie) may have a few flaws (who doesn’t really?), but both are worthy of recognition. She is a feisty, fascinating female with an adventurous spirit who classifies herself as “a vagabond of the air.” She never lets anyone tell her that something can’t be done and believes that pursuing one’s passion is the only way to live. Swank captures the essence of Earhart, bringing to life the legendary aviatrix.

Earhart becomes the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, commanding (but not piloting) a crew in 1928. This flight brings notoriety and endorsement deals encouraged by her publisher, and later husband, George Putnam (Richard Gere). Feeling like a fraud, she would rather “face a watery grave” than let that be her only legacy.

Eventually she flies solo over the Atlantic, proving that a woman is fully capable of such an accomplishment. During her final flight in 1937 (a journey intercut throughout the film) she attempts to circumnavigate the globe. During that flight she vanishes and her fate remains unknown.

Amelia Earhart is a true heroine. She is a brave soul and someone that every individual—especially young girls and women everywhere—can be inspired by in regard to pursuing passion and following one’s dreams.

“If I listened to everyone who said it was impossible —I’d never be flying,” she said. “Don’t ever let anyone turn you around.”
